{"id":4005,"date":"2024-02-13T16:01:41","date_gmt":"2024-02-13T09:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mrlg.org\/?post_type=post&#038;p=4005"},"modified":"2024-05-08T18:30:30","modified_gmt":"2024-05-08T11:30:30","slug":"research-paves-way-for-more-land-allocated-to-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mrlg.org\/km-kh\/news\/research-paves-way-for-more-land-allocated-to-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"Research paves way for more land allocated to farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A research suggesting that more land be reallocated to farmers was well received by the government in Cambodia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently the government allocates state land for farming through \neither economic land concessions (ELCs) targeting large scale investors \n(up to 10,000 hectares for 50 years) or through social land concessions \n(SLCs) targeting landless poor households providing access to farmland \nup to 3 hectares. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The former scheme has caused disputes between investors and local \ncommunities, while the latter scheme failed to achieve the desired \noutcome of securing the livelihood of the poorest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The results of the two-years research conducted by the Centre for \nPolicy Studies (CPS) with support from the Mekong Region Land Governance\n (MRLG) suggested that a more adequate land allocation system should \nfall between the two existing schemes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a workshop held in Phnom Penh last week with the concerned \nministries, CPS proposed to allocate larger farmland plots to small and \nmedium farmers from state land becoming available as ELCs are revoked or\n their size reduced. CPS highlighted as well the opportunities for \npartnership agreements between companies managing ELCs and local \ncommunities. These policies would give farmers access to more land and a\n more secure tenure so that they can in turn increase their productivity\n and income, and at the same time reduce land conflicts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries<a href=\"https:\/\/www.khmertimeskh.com\/50550275\/researchers-ask-government-to-grant-more-land-to-farmers\/?fbclid=IwAR2ld-lrs1RL_wi-t957d2M6bhN_HtUAqWk3iLGPEcCUSUOM5Hl_HRoOCQE\"> welcomed<\/a>\n the results of the study and expressed its interest to further explore \nthese policy implications, particularly related to promoting \npartnerships between investors and local communities.
