This brief presents key strategic and operational lessons from the Mekong Regional Land Governance (MRLG) project for designing land governance initiatives in politically complex environments. Drawing on MRLG\u2019s decade-long experience across four countries (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Vietnam), the brief illustrates how the project adapted to political and policy shifts. These insights offer practical guidance to donors and implementers on building politically agile, inclusive, and resilient land governance programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mekong Region Land Governance Project (MRLG), active from 2014 to 2025, pursued land tenure security in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, and Viet Nam through a politically informed, adaptive strategy. Key findings highlight that MRLG\u2019s effectiveness stemmed from building thematic alliances on customary tenure and responsible agricultural investment, which enabled coordinated advocacy and policy influence. Constructive government engagement\u2014framed around national development goals\u2014allowed access to policy spaces, particularly in restrictive contexts. Evidence-based research, regional norm promotion via ASEAN, and technical framing helped depoliticise sensitive issues. However, trade-offs emerged between inclusivity and effectiveness, and between credibility and influence.
