Recognising Farmers’ Land Rights in Lao PDR

A high-level commitment of the Government of the Lao PDR is to restore forest cover to 70% of the country, largely in State Forestlands. However, almost 3,000 villages are located inside these State Conservation, Protection, and Production Forests. While forest protection is necessary, without rights to use and manage their land individually and collectively, the land rights and livelihoods of these communities are in jeopardy.
